Although it’s been reported that the three teams in on Jose Abreu were the Cubs, Marlins, and Red Sox, you can add a fourth team to the mix.
Not only that, but the phrasing – much like it was with the Cubs – is that Abreu is a priority:
The Padres, unfortunately, make all the sense in the world as a team to go after Abreu, who is not attached to draft pick compensation. The Padres are in a clear win-now window, and while you could go through every position and say they have a clear starter in place, there’s one spot you couldn’t do that: first base.
Not unlike with the Cubs and other suitors, it’s still not clear where Abreu wants to look geographically, but here’s hoping he LOVES Chicago and just really wants to stay in Chicago. The fit, from the Cubs’ perspective, is more or less perfect. With Anthony Rizzo getting two years and $40 million guaranteed from the Yankees (even under the threat of the qualifying offer attaching and crushing his market if he hit free agency), the price tag on Abreu figures to be at least that high, and perhaps a click higher.
