When the Chicago Cubs claimed infielder Rylan Bannon off of waivers from the Atlanta Braves two weeks ago, I suspected they might try eventually to sneak Bannon through waivers (as the Braves had tried) so they could outright him to Triple-A Iowa. That way, they’d get to keep him for 2023, but he wouldn’t take up a 40-man roster spot.
Sure enough, the Cubs tried … and they got SO close, but not close enough. The World Champion Astros, in the final claiming spot, snagged Bannon from the Cubs, per the transaction wire.
The Astros will almost certainly try the same trick eventually, and we’ll see if the Cubs try to grab Bannon once again. Clearly the Cubs want him, but don’t feel he’s quite yet worth taking up a 40-man roster spot.
The Cubs’ 40-man roster is down to 36 right now.
