HELLO WINTER MEETINGS. We might be about to see one of the biggest trades of the offseason going down, as Oakland A’s stud catcher Sean Murphy could be on the way out.
To a very surprising team, even? Maybe so:
The Braves, of course, have William Contreras, Travis d’Arnaud, AND Manny Piña already, so if they were to acquire Murphy – without sending back one of those three in the deal – you could safely assume they plan a subsequent trade.
The price tag on Murphy, with three years of team control remaining and a big-time glove to match the very good bat, is going to be enormous. Or it should be, anyway. Let’s see where this goes, and we can deconstruct the potential fallout for the Cubs (including the rest of the catching market).
UPDATE: A couple additional thoughts here. One, Piña was formerly a stud behind the plate, but missed almost all of 2022 after wrist surgery. At 34, not sure you could count on him still being a stud back there. Two, if Vaughn Grissom is in this deal – stud Braves prospect who was otherwise going to take over at shortstop – you have to wonder if this is a signal that the Braves feel good about retaining Dansby Swanson.
UPDATE 2: Not the Braves, as Feinsand must’ve gotten some calls:
Please not the Cardinals. Because if it’s the Cardinals, you just KNOW it will be for a terrible, weak return. YOU KNOW IT IN YOUR SOUL.
