Cubs Are “Close on a Few Deals” – Is Jameson Taillon One of Them?

Chicago Cubs

Tonight in his interview on Marquee, Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer spoke about the work the Cubs are doing at the meetings, and how they feel like there has been a lot of progress. Of particular note, he was willing to say that the Cubs are “close on a few deals,” which stood waaaay out to me.

Maybe one of those deals was the Cody Bellinger signing (it’s not official yet, so Hoyer is probably counting it as still coming), but maybe a couple more? Close? As in … tonight? Tomorrow? Immediately after the meetings? The head spins, especially after the rumors last night about the shortstops.

One of the possible moves could be in the rotation, though, when you consider that the second tier is really moving today, with Andrew Heaney signing with the Rangers and Taijuan Walker signing with the Phillies. If so, it’s possible that signing could be Jameson Taillon, who is increasingly connected to the Cubs, and whom Bruce Levine said he heard the Cubs might be close on:

We’ll have much more on Taillon if the Cubs do land him, but I think we have to start thinking he’s going to get a four-year deal, even if he projects as merely league average. That’s just where things are with starting pitchers, and if the Cubs see some upside in Taillon when brought into their pitching infrastructure, I could be into it.

Stay tuned for Taillon or something else.
