Willson Contreras Reportedly Has Long-Term Offers on the Table from Both the Cardinals and Astros

Chicago Cubs

Based on the early rumors, the two main teams in on outgoing Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras are the Houston Astros and the St. Louis Cardinals. I have never liked the Astros more.

Some of the latest on that front, where things are apparently really heating up:

I’m surprised to hear Kaplan report that five-year deals are on the table for Contreras (though I’d be happy for him if he landed one). I suppose the thinking would be that, even if and when his ability to remain a full-time catcher wanes, he still has the bat to support a whole lot of DH starts.

As much as I don’t want Contreras to wind up with the Cardinals, I can’t help but note that they are otherwise suitors for both Christian Vazquez and Sean Murphy, catchers in whom the Cubs have interest. So if you could stomach Contreras in Cardinal red from a fan perspective, him going there wouldn’t actually be the worst outcome. (But I’m not sure I *can* stomach it … )

A reminder that, when Contreras signs with a new team, the Cubs will net a compensatory draft pick after the second round in 2023.
