I’m just a hot ball of anger tonight. Maybe it’s reasonable at this point, or maybe I’ve tipped over into meatball. Maybe tomorrow I’ll remind myself that there are other options (again), and that this was just one possible piece of a successful offseason (again). But for tonight, I’m going to instead think about how THE CUBS COULDN’T EVEN LAND THEIR PREFERRED CATCHING TARGET IN FREE AGENCY.
The whole point in parting ways with Willson Contreras was because the Cubs wanted instead to have a certain kind of catching tandem in place, and Vazquez – paired with Yan Gomes – was the perfect iteration of that type of tandem. And Vazquez was right there, available in free agency.
But he’s instead signing with the freaking Minnesota Twins:
I’m sure it’ll be a pretty healthy contract, BUT SO WHAT. This was a guy who obviously made so much sense for what the Cubs are trying to do. But, yet again, some other team gets the guy who makes sense for the Cubs in an offseason where they are theoretically trying to compete.
Maybe tomorrow I can talk about other catching options still available – yeah, yeah, yeah, there are some in free agency and trade – but THIS IS THE GUY I WANTED. Especially after Sean Murphy was traded for freaking peanuts earlier today.
Lord I’m hot right now.
