You know the words. Maybe they indicate less in practical effect than they used to, now that everyone shows up early. But they are still among the most lovely words in the English language. Say them with me.

By tradition, today marks the day that we treat as the “start” of Spring Training, and thus the “start” of the baseball season. After a winter of maneuverings and hope-building, the on-field work begins.
For the 2023 Chicago Cubs, Spring Training will feature a whole lot of roster sorting and role defining at the margins, but it’ll mostly be about making sure the key actors are healthy and in shape for the regular season, which is still more than a month away. Other than health, the stakes in Spring Training are so low that we can mostly just have fun, be positive, and be optimistic. There’s no cost to it.
