Tim McCarver made his big league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals all the way back in 1959, when he was just 17 years old. He played for 21 seasons thereafter, and then went on to be a color analyst at various TV stops until he announced his retirement in April of last year. That’s 63 years, all told, spent almost entirely in professional baseball.
McCarver died today at age 81, according to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
It was an incredible career, and I expect a great many people are very sad today. McCarver was most recently known around these parts as a St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster, but his voice always reminded me of the postseason, especially in my younger days.
All the best to Tim McCarver’s family, friends, and those with whom he shared some of those 63 years in pro baseball.
