Hayden Wesneski Looked Ridiculously Good Today

Chicago Cubs

Making his two-inning Spring Training debut, Chicago Cubs righty Hayden Wesneski looked as good as you can look.

Immediately, Wesneski came out of the gate making Julio Rodriguez look like the rookie he was last year – but, like, not a superstar rookie. Just a regular rookie.

Wesneski actually struck him out twice in the at bat, but the first time, his massive slider moved so much it fooled the umpire. So when Wesneski came back with a fastball at the knees, J-Rod was completely flummoxed:

Wesneski would go on to strike out three more, allowing just one bit of hard contact (an A.J. Pollock double) and a walk on a pitch clock violation.

Look at this perrrrrrfect tunneling:

Generally speaking, I have no problem with Cubs wanting to see Adrian Sampson or Javier Assad as the 5th starter initially (Sampson most likely), while simultaneously managing Wesneski’s innings to open the season at Iowa.

… but if Wesneski looks like this all spring, it’s going to be mighty tough to send him down.
