Cubs vs Rangers: Cubs Lineup, Pitching Matchup, How to Watch, More

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs (7-4) have won six games in a row and have the second most wins in the Cactus League (tied for second most Spring Training wins in baseball!). Obviously, that means we need re-think the projected standings and start planning to take vacation in October to watch their deep playoff run.

Here’s the Cubs Cactus League lineup against the Texas Rangers.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

  1. Nick Madrigal, 3B
  2. Cody Bellinger, CF
  3. Edwin Rios, 1B
  4. Yan Gomes, C
  5. Mike Tauchman, LF
  6. Chris Morel, RF
  7. David Bote, DH
  8. Zach McKinstry, 2B
  9. Sergio Alcantara, SS

SP: Adrian Sampson, RHP

Hayden Wesneski had a great second start yesterday, but today, his primary competition for the fifth starter job, Adrian Sampson, gets to respond. Brett delivered a hearty Sampson vs. Wesneski discussion in the bullets today, so you can go there for a little more. Sampson has made one start so far and it wasn’t great: 1.2 IP, 3H, 1BB, 1K, 4ER on three homers. Sampson likely has the inside track to break camp with the Cubs, but he’ll need to do better than that to keep it, with how well Wesneski has pitched.

Nick Madrigal is back up top the lineup this afternoon, as he has in almost all of his starts when Nico Hoerner is not in the lineup. He’s getting more reps at third base and it seems likely the Cubs want to be REALLY SURE they give him every chance to earn that job.

Meanwhile, a lot of people are “out of position” today. Chris Morel is in right field, Michael Tauchman is in left, Edwin Rios is at first, Zach McKinstry is at second, and Sergio Alcantara (remember him?) comes in for the rare start at short. It’s a “let’s see what you got” kinda day.
