Jose Altuve Has to Leave the Game After Being Hit by a Pitch (UPDATES)

Amidst a furious comeback in the middle innings by Venezuela in tonight’s quarterfinal match-up against Team USA, Jose Altuve got hit in the hand by a Daniel Bard pitch and went down.

He had to leave the game, and you hope that this isn’t going to be another serious WBC injury:

It looks bad. Obviously. I tend to think there would be extra caution in these games, and so even if Altuve thought he might be able to stay in, they’d probably yank him. But it didn’t really look like a situation where he was trying to stay in.

UPDATE: Oof. This would be bad:

UPDATE 2: Sure enough, it’s a fractured thumb, which will require surgery. The early estimate is that Altuve misses at least a couple months:
