The Cubs won again today, thumping the Diamondbacks 11-1. If they could carry this spring record into the regular season we’d all be thrilled.
- Hayden Wesneski CRUISED today, in what might’ve been his final showing before he’s officially announced as part of the opening rotation. He reportedly touched 97 mph on the stadium gun at one point, which is almost certainly hot, but even touching 95 with some regularity would be huge for him. Not sure how on earth you could not include him at this point.
- This guy:
- The much-anticipated latest Keegan Thompson outing arrived, and he actually went two innings today, cruising through both. For all the justified concerns about his velocity, he has certainly thrown some nasty sliders this spring that I’ve seen.
- Had been a click lower on each pitch, on average, in previous couple outings, per reports. So it does seem like a step forward. Question is whether Cubs carry him to open the season while he keeps trying to right the mechanics/velo, or if they give him more time.
- Miles Mastrobuoni, who had another good day at the plate, is a darkhorse to make the Opening Day roster. He’s got options remaining, which could work against him, but a quality lefty bat who can play all over? And don’t forget, Cubs traded a legit relief prospect to get him.
