The Cubs lost their first series of the season, dropping two out of three against the Brewers at Wrigley Field over the weekend. The pitching and defense was on full display in Games 1 and 2, and the offense finally showed up a bit in Game 3, but the sequencing was off, so they’re 1-2 on the year.
I would really, extremely like NOT to be able to say “…and the last time they were above .500 was on Opening Day,” so let’s beat the Reds this week, yes?
Speaking of which, at least this series is in Cincinnati. That’s usually a welcoming place for Cubs hitters, especially Ian Happ.
Happ has begun the year nicely, with three hits (including a homer) and four walks in his first three games of the season. Dansby Swanson is even hotter, with seven hits and one walk through his first three games, including a double and tons of hard contact. Marcus Stroman will make his second start of the season in the early-morning finale on Wednesday, after a really nice Opening Day performance against Milwaukee (six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts).
But I think we’re all most excited for Hayden Wesneski’s regular season debut. The Cubs prospect won his job in the rotation this spring, after a dominant month of March and a really excellent big league debut last season.
