That was funnnnnnn. Blowout wins usually are. Great pitching. Great hitting. Lotsa flubs by the Rangers.
It was a hit parade for the Cubs today, with 14 knocks in their 8 offensive innings. Patrick Wisdom continued to rake, with a single and his third homer of the year:
A couple hits each for Nico Hoerner (who should’ve had a walk, too (terrrrrrible strike three call on a full count)) and Nick Madrigal, too. Cubs also got multi-hit days from Dansby Swanson and Trey Mancini, each of whom also drove in a run with an opposite-field single, which just looks nice:
Yan Gomes finally got in on the fun, too, after a lot of close calls this year (remember how close he was to a grand slam?). His first homer of the year:
Dansby Swanson scored from first on this play, taking advantage of some lackadaisical efforts from the Rangers – that’s the kind of player he is:
If you needed another reminder of what it looks like to be a guy who everyone says is a “winning player.” That play. That was it.
Cubs pitchers had more than a few moments where things could’ve gone sideways, but each of Justin Steele and Keegan Thompson buckled down and got out of a tight spot. Maybe it wouldn’t have mattered in the end given the offense, but it was still great to see. I love the confidence we’re seeing out there.
Knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock:
