Dansby Swanson’s ELITE shortstop defense has been on full display tonight — even on plays when he didn’t make an out. But I don’t think he could’ve made a bigger impact in this game than the excellent pick and throwout of the lead runner with no outs in the top of the 8th inning.
This was just HUGE.
If Swanson booted that ball – or even went to first with it instead – this game could’ve gone in a very different direction right then and there. And as Boog and JD pointed out later on the broadcast, that was NOT an easy pick. That ball took one heck of a hop off the mound, but Swanson made it look EASY.
He got the lead runner, and a few batters later, the inning was over.
He’s the latest in a long line of elite Cubs defensive shortstops.
Update: Ope. I jinxed it. Michael Fulmer just gave up a game-tying homer in the top of the 9th.
