Well, I can’t say I had any idea the Chicago Cubs were installing new, brighter LED lights at Wrigley Field before tonight’s matchup with the Seattle Mariners … but Boog and JD talked about them for about three full innings tonight (did you know they cost $3 million?!), so I am now very much aware.
They really are quite bright:
Of course, the light-related wonder didn’t stop there.
After Nick Madrigal and Nico Hoerner combined to walk off this extra-innings game and put the Cubs back over .500 for the third time this season, the new lights danced along to Go, Cubs, Go!
I imagine that’ll rub some people the wrong way, but I’m not one of them. I love singing that song after the Cubs win at Wrigley Field, and I think a little accompanying light show is just tasteful enough. The ballpark – and neighborhood – has certainly changed a LOT over the years. And not all of it for the better. But this one, like the video boards (and even Gallagher Way, frankly) feels acceptable. Fun, even.
Just don’t do that strobe thing after homers, please. That is not something I’d get used to anytime soon. Baby steps, Cubs people. Baby steps.
UPDATE: Just saw this, the lights also make a “W.” And that’s leading to a legit, organic, and PERFECT hashtag for the season. #LightTheW
Okay, I’m going to go watch Nico Hoerner walk it off for the bajillionth time tonight. Bye.
