I don’t know what’s gotten into Yan Gomes tonight, but he is feeling himself. After a single and a stolen base (he’s now 8-8 in stolen bases for his career), and a run scored in the top of the third inning, the Cubs catcher homered in the top of the 5th.
That’s Gomes’ second home run of the season and second hit of the night.
It wasn’t a mammoth blast — Statcast had it at 101.4 MPH, 391 feet — but it had enough to get out. Gomes overall numbers are still quite poor this season, even for a catcher (and after a red-hot spring performance, no less), but maybe he’ll find a stride here in the early season. He was 0-10 with 4Ks against Noah Syndergaard before tonight.
