The Cubs have now won three straight series against teams with legitimate playoff aspirations in 2023: the Dodgers, Mariners, and Rangers. Chicago is 7-3 in their last ten games and currently second in the NL Central. However, they still haven’t been three games over .500 since June 30 … of 2021. So maybe we shouldn’t count any chickens.
That said, the Cubs are in a strong position to take that next step forward this week with three games against the A’s, two of which will be started by Justin Steele and Marcus Stroman, who’ve been as good as anybody this year. Even still, the series begins tonight with the rookie, Hayden Wesneski, who’s had a really poor start to his first full MLB season. You’d love to see him finally get a solid outing under his belt so this season doesn’t get away from him right out of the gate. Confidence building and whatnot.
This series is also a good time to bank some wins against a beatable team, because after Wednesday’s finale with the A’s, we’re right back in the meat grinder with four against the Dodgers and three against the Padres at Wrigley Field.
Who knows … maybe we’ll get some reinforcements before the month is over.
