Cubs vs Padres: Pitching Probables, Injuries, Broadcast Info
The Cubs just dropped their second series of the season, though it was a fairly competitive four-game set against the Dodgers, and they’re still three games above .500. Unfortunately, they do have another tough matchup with San Diego coming to town.
No, the Padres (12-12) haven’t quite gotten off the ground yet, but their lineup is loaded and they have legitimate World Series aspirations this season. The Cubs have to find a way to avoid being the team that gets their season going … kinda like they did with the Dodgers.
If you’re looking for some optimism, though, I’ve got you. This season, the Padres have struggled a bit against left-handed pitching: .241/.295/.410 (94 wRC+, 18th in MLB). And they’ll face two left-handed starters in Games 1 and 2, including the red-hot Justin Steele and the near-perfect-his-last-time-out Drew Smyly.
Meanwhile, the Cubs, who have destroyed left-handed pitching this season (121 wRC+), get to face a southpaw, Blake Snell, tonight. And then they get the familiar righty, Michael Wacha, who has been horrible at Wrigley Field throughout his career: 5.80 ERA over 10 games.
With the series at home, and these pitching matchups, you have to feel good about the Cubs chances.
And, hey, if they are able to reel in a series win, they have a pretty soft stretch coming up: Miami (3), Washington (4), Miami (3) before getting back in the meat grinder: Cardinals (3), Twins (3), Astros (3), Phillies (3), Mets (3), Reds (3 … easy), Rays (3), Padres (4).
By the end of that second Padres series in early June, we may know everything we need to know about this ball club. Not that far away.
