Despite entering the season with relatively low expectations, the Chicago Cubs have gotten off to a pretty fantastic start (14-10), including series wins against playoff hopefuls like the Dodgers, Rangers, Mariners, and Padres. By contrast, the Chicago White Sox came into the season with high expectations — and even higher levels of frustration — and, well, it’s just not working out. To say the least.
“It’s possible the Sox will play better,” writes Ken Rosenthal at The Athletic, “if only because they can’t play much worse.”
He continues: “Their pitchers’ walk rate entering Thursday was the second highest in the majors. Their hitters’ walk rate was the third lowest. No team, in sum, was worse at controlling the strike zone.”
As of today (April 28), the White Sox are 7-19, having lost eight straight games and nine of their last ten. They’re already 8.0 games out of first place, and have seen their playoff odds drop from 30.5% before the season to just 4.4% today (FanGraphs).
That’s bruuuuuuutal, especially considering how underwhelming their open window of contention has been after a rebuild.
With that said, we Cubs fans are in absolutely NO position to throw stones. This team may be off to a hot start, but it’s still only April. And it’s not like we’ve had anything to get excited about from 2018-2022.
But you know who is allowed to criticize the team? White Sox fans. And this Sox fan caller into ESPN 1000 did just that earlier this week. And then some.
Truly, this has to be one of the most impressive, hilarious, genuine, insightful, knowledgeable, and scorched-earth-level scathing reviews of a fan’s own team in call-in radio history. It is just beautiful and absolutely worth your time.
You can find the official YouTube link from Waddle and Silvy right here (the call-in starts at 7:55), but here’s a clip of the money section:
(Apologies for those who can’t listen, it’s a bit too long and winding to do a full transcription).
I. Am. Dying.
That is seriously just so good and so entertaining. I listen to my fair share of sports radio and the callers are usually (1) annoying or (2) completely out of their depths. But this guy actually knows what he’s talking about *and* has excellent delivery. And you know that’s true because they just let him go on, uninterrupted, for nearly SEVEN minutes. That’s seriously so funny.
I feel so bad for White Sox fans.
