Chicago Cubs

Cubs vs Nationals: This week, the Chicago Cubs will look to shake off a tough series sweep against the Marlins with four games against one of the worst teams in baseball. Of course, even bad teams have some good players, and the Cubs will be stuck batting against one tonight: MacKenzie Gore.

Gore, 24, was one of the main pieces in the Juan Soto trade last summer, and he’s pitched well for the Nationals so far this season (five starts, 27.0 IP): 19H, 9ER, 16BB, 35K. He’s generating a ton of groundballs, he’s limiting barrels, and he’s really had just one “bad” start. The good news is that he will walk you if you let him, the bad news is that the strikeouts and groundballs make him an effective base clearer. That’s definitely going to be the toughest matchup for the Cubs this week and it’s in the first game.

On the flip side, Drew Smyly and Marcus Stroman have both pitched well, and are both going in this series. And Hayden Wesneski has made small, but incremental progress over his last few starts. We still don’t know who’s going to make the Thursday start in this series – pretty easy to guess it will not be Caleb Kilian. But apparently Jameson Taillon is an option, depending on how his bullpen goes tomorrow.
