Chicago Cubs

It doesn’t always feel like a “comeback win” when you win by four, but the Cubs did come back late in that one!

You had Matt Mervis tying things up with a deep double to center field in the 7th:

And then Yan Gomes giving the Cubs the lead:

(Slight bit of shade there in the tweet maybe?)

The Cubs added insurance from there – most notably Christopher Morel’s monster homer – and wound up winning comfortably.

If you weren’t aware that Sonny Gray was resurgent this year, you got a taste of it tonight. At age 33, he is the best version of himself, and there’s a reason he’s been arguably the best pitcher in the American League this year. I kinda hoped it was not real coming into tonight, but he looked the part. (Didn’t hurt that he was getting an extra inch or three off the edges, but the guy was quite good.)

Thankfully, all those Gray strikeouts took a whole lot of pitches, and he was out of the game before the sixth inning ended. That set up the stage for the Cubs to finally start scoring some runs.

On the other side of the ball, Drew Smyly was perfectly solid, and then the Cubs’ two most effective relievers this year finished things out.

Full box score.
