The big league Cubs were off yesterday, so I appreciated the Double-A Tennessee Smokies, who were playing on Marquee last night, pulling off a great comeback win.
The Smokies were down to their last two outs in the ninth when infielder B.J. Murray pulled one out to right to tie the game up and send it to extra-innings:
Murray, 23, was the Cubs’ 15th rounder in 2021, has climbed the system rapidly with his exceptional discipline (currently sporting a 19.0% walk rate against a 22.2% strikeout rate in the sticky-ball league). The switch-hitter is now hitting .232/.389/.424/132 wRC+ on the year.
After Murray tied it up in the 9th, the Smokies held the Biscuits scoreless in the top of the 10th (shouts to reliever Ben Hecht, who went the final 2.1 innings scoreless).
That set up a walk-off opportunity for Pete Crow-Armstrong, who sent one up the middle to bring the Smokies home a winner:
PCA got the walk-off hit and the celebration, and of course got absolutely DOUCHED with the gatorade:
That’s just love right there. PCA, who has been in a bit of a slump (.222/.280/.333/73 wRC+ over his last 10), was glad to be in a position to just send one back up the middle:
