There really isn’t another way to describe what just happened in the White Sox-Tigers game beyond that headline there. One of the craziest endings I’ve ever seen.
Technically, it goes down as a wild pitch walk-off win, but you don’t ever see it happen like this:
Even if the pitch hadn’t struck the umpire, it was probably going to be wild enough to create a walk-off, unless I guess the catcher was RIGHT on top of the ricochet.
Ultimately, you hope the umpire, Cory Blaser, will be OK. He’s got a mask on, but that’s 96 mph right to the head. Scary stuff.
Also, that was apparently the only game in baseball history with three runs scored – and only three runs – all on wild pitches.
