Although he assumed something closer to a full-time broadcaster gig over the past year, it’s possible the managerial bug never left Joe Girardi.
Reportedly, Girardi has been offered the head coach job at Central Florida, which is among that higher tier of college baseball programs:
The fact that this is getting out at all would seem to suggest it is at least a little serious, whether it’s a leverage play or not.
If Girardi, 58, were to accept the job, I expect that it would dramatically curtail or completely eliminate his time at Marquee Sports Network. College coaching is a year-round job these days, and obviously most of his busiest times would overlap with much of the MLB season.
For me, I’d be a little disappointed if Marquee lost Girardi entirely. I know that the three-man booth is not for everyone, and there are times when it just doesn’t work. But generally speaking, I do like hearing Girardi’s perspective on the game from time to time. He has a wealth of experience in a variety of roles and cities, and even if I don’t always agree with him, I do think he has a lot to offer overall.
UPDATE (Michael): Unsurprisingly, in my opinion, Girardi has turned down the position. He’ll stick in the broadcast booth for now, until, I assume he gets another shot at a big league club.
