The Myrtle Beach Pelicans Walked It Off for the Third Straight Game Thanks to Pedro Ramirez

Yesterday, we enjoyed Jonathon Long going deep to walk the Myrtle Beach Pelicans off after trailing in the 9th. That was actually the second consecutive walk-off win for the Cubs’ Low-A affiliate, with the previous night’s installment having come in the 10th inning (after the Pelicans scored two to tie it in the bottom of the 9th).

Well, they did it again. For the third straight night – and the third straight game where they were trailing in the 9th – the Pelicans walked it off:

That’s Pedro Ramirez doubling off the wall to bring in two runs and send everyone home happy. Ramirez, 19, was a breakout prospect in the Arizona Complex League last year, putting up huge numbers just a year after he’d done the same in the Dominican Summer League.

You probably are, right now, remembering that you remember that name, and you’re wondering why you haven’t heard much about him this year. Well, in his first taste of full-season ball – albeit at a relatively young age – Ramirez struggled, hitting just .220/.280/.275/62 wRC+ through his first 25 games, with an uncharacteristic 24.8% K rate. That’s when the Cubs sent the switch-hitting infielder back to Arizona for a couple weeks of work. I wouldn’t say that took him off the radar, but it did make you wonder if the lack of hype he was receiving nationally even after posting back-to-back 150-ish wRC+ in the short-season leagues was for a reason.

Well, since his return to Myrtle Beach on May 30, Ramirez has hit .260/.362/.395/118 wRC+, with a 13.0% BB rate and 14.6% K rate. Since July 5, it’s an even more impressive .262/.386/.415/132 wRC+, with a 15.8% BB rate and 12.0% K rate. That is some seriously good progress, and exactly what you like to see for a young prospect at new level.

Overall, Ramirez’s season numbers are now an almost exact match for what James Triantos did at Myrtle Beach last year at the same age. Both are somewhat smaller 2B/3B types, both were putting up ridiculous numbers somewhere other than full-season ball when they were teenagers, and both started out slow at Low-A before turning it on as the year went along. I’m not saying Ramirez should be thought of in the same vein as Triantos – scouting matters – but I am absolutely saying that what Ramirez has done this year, at his age, should have us paying attention.
