Sometimes I wonder if Angel Hernández is curious why he, among so many umpires, is routinely singled out for ridicule. His is one of the few MLB umpire names that is synonymous with his gaffes, and I’m certain that’s not a very pleasant place to be, professionally speaking.
But the thing is, Hernández has been provably bad at his job for a long time, and it’s hard to ignore when he apparently sets the mark for the worst called game in FIVE YEARS:
The Umpire Auditor clocked it at 16 missed calls out of 92, meaning Hernández correctly called just 82.6% of the pitches. Think about how few pitches are even close enough TO POSSIBLY get wrong, and that is just a jarringly bad performance.
Hence why people know Angel Hernández’s name, when other umpires go by largely anonymous.
