I am not “giving up” on the Cubs for 2023. They go on runs. It happens. Mathematically yada-yada. Postseason still possible. But …
*IF* this keeps on sinking the way it has been for 10 days now, I’ll prolly look back at that Ketel Marte homer as the moment we all said goodnight. It was hard enough to hold on to any hope after last night, but once this game got flushed, it was like … what am I even doing.
The Cubs were swept by the Diamondbacks tonight, capping off a stretch that pretty much could not have possibly gone worse. It’s pretty hard to sink from 4.0 games up in the second Wild Card spot to out of playoff position entirely in just ten games, but the Cubs have pulled it off.
Jordan Wicks didn’t get much help behind him and was not at his sharpest, but he at least managed to keep things competitive for yet another start. That’s the minimum you need to see, and you keep seeing it with him. He’s got a future in the Cubs’ rotation, and at least that’s been nice over the last couple weeks (even if very little else has been).
I don’t have much else to say tonight …
