Votto is Coming Back, Cubs Two-Way Prospect Nazier Mulé Staying Two-Way, and Other Cubs Bullets

The postseason gets back underway today, with the NLDS and ALDS kicking off: Rangers-Orioles is at noon CT, Twins-Astros is at 3:45pm CT, Phillies-Braves is at 5pm CT, and Diamondbacks-Dodgers is at 8:20pm CT.

  • Great news for fans of baseball, in my opinion. Joey Votto has decided to keep going:
  • From The Athletic, Emo Joey Votto:
  • Votto also admitted that he cried before his last game at Great American Ball Park last month.

“The day before the last game in Cincinnati, I thought, ‘this might be my last game playing in Cincinnati,’” Votto said during his radio interview. “So I was sitting on my couch at home the night before playing ‘Landslide’ by Fleetwood Mac probably about 15 times in a row, and that part that says, ‘I’ve been afraid of changing because I’ve built my life around you.’ I played that like 15 times and I was bawling thinking about the end of tenure, the end of my relationship with the Cincinnati Reds and the fan base, with the experience. So, yeah, that was the last time I cried and I cried hard, pretty hard.”

  • Votto, 40, is one of the most enjoyable personalities in the game, and I was pretty sad about the possibility he was all done making a go of it. After a huge 2021 season, Votto fell off the last two years, dealing with aging and physical issues, hitting just .204/.317/.394/95 wRC+. I’m sure the Reds will find a way to bring him back on a modest deal, but if not, I’m equally sure some team out there would take a flier on Votto as a part-time player and veteran presence. Working against him slightly: in his last two down years, Votto has hit lefties much better than righties. Would you trust that that’s a repeatable thing? A veteran lefty who is much better against lefties? Or is that a small-sample fluke, and his struggles against righties is the real concern?

  • If you missed Arizona Phil’s note at The Cub Reporter on Cubs prospect Nazier Mulé at instructs in Arizona, it’s a fun one:

  • You may recall that Mulé, the Cubs’ 4th rounder last year who signed for a well-above-slot bonus, was a two-way player in high school, but was mostly viewed as a future pitcher because of his 100 mph arm. It’s TBD how that’ll play out in his recovery from Tommy John surgery in the spring, but the Cubs were initially open to letting him continue to work with position players, too. So, then, now that he’s getting back to work, it’s very interesting to see that he’s taking BP and participating with the position players. That would seem to suggest, even after TJS, that Mulé is going to be given a chance to keep developing as a true two-way prospect. The timing works out well, because Mulé probably won’t be able to pitch competitively until mid-to-late-2024 if the Cubs are as conservative as they usually are. This way, he can hit in games and keep developing there in the meantime.
  • That’d be a whole lot of fun, obviously. I don’t think the challenge can be overstated, though. The game is SO HARD at the professional level that actually being able to pitch successfully up the minor league ladder (much less in MLB) WHILE ALSO developing as a hitter in the upper levels (much less in MLB) is nearly impossible. There’s a reason we just don’t see it, and a reason that the last guy who really tried – Rays prospect Brendan McKay – hit relatively little in his minor league progression, did not rake, and is ultimately viewed much more as a possible big league pitcher than a true two-way guy. McKay missed the 2023 season after September 2022 Tommy John surgery.
  • The Angels currently don’t have even a single Assistant GM:
  • The pool is not off-limits for celebrations:
  • Happy anniversary to a top five homer (there were a lot of great ones!) from the march to the World Series:

Watch Out for the Dodgers on Tyler Glasnow

Andrew Chafin Signing with the Tigers, Will Smith Signing with the Royals

Technically, The Dodgers Haven’t Announced, or Even Acknowledged, the Shohei Ohtani Deal Yet

Yesterday's celebration of Shohei Ohtani's landmark free agent decision was a one-way street. It was Ohtani making the celebratory announcement and his agency talking up the huge $700 million, 10-year deal, but there was silence from the team signing him....
