Cubs Prospect Notes: Canario, Triantos, Alcántara, Shaw, Rojas, More

Chicago Cubs prospect goodness for your Friday afternoon …

  • Alexander Canario’s time in the Dominican Winter League is going as well as his 2023 bounce-back did:
  • Canario, 23, is now hitting .350/.462/.500 over his first 26 PAs, with just 4 Ks, plus 3 BBs and 3 2Bs. It’s a competitive league – they are not about player development, they are about winning games – and Canario has been hitting 3rd and 4th in the Águilas Cibaeñas lineup. Clearly, his team thinks highly of his ability, and the results back it up so far. Ultimately, this is all you want to see for Canario this winter. Get those ABs, work on contact, and stay sharp for Spring Training.
  • Meanwhile, James Triantos’s post-season playing is going even better. Yes, still. He’s now getting that MVP talk:
  • Right now, Triantos sports a ridiculous 1.304 OPS in the AFL, which would be the highest in OVER A DECADE. He doesn’t quite have an explanation for why he’s exploding right now, other than just sticking with his approach (Cubs.com): “You know, it’s really just staying consistent with what I do best, being able to repeat it. I go up there and I execute my plan. It doesn’t really matter who’s out there on that mound.”
  • Bonus in that piece about Triantos, some praise for his farm-mates: “Our farm system is loaded right now with guys. Everybody can play, everybody is competing. It’s fun. You got to keep playing, keep getting better, keep working on your craft. I enjoy working with those guys because they’re so good, they take it seriously and they’re locked in all the time.”
  • Triantos also got an interview on Foul Territory, and I think we’d all be extremely happy if this is where his game ended up:
  • A mini profile here on Kevin Alcántara, whose childhood nickname – The Jaguar – has followed him to pro ball. Triantos is among the youngest players in the AFL at just 20 years old, but we can’t forget that Alcántara just turned 21 a few months ago.
  • Relief prospects Jose Romero and Adam Laskey continue to have success in the AFL, as they are in the bottom handful of pitcher ERAs among guys with at least six innings pitched.
  • Heavy praise for Matt Shaw:
  • A reminder just how good Cubs shortstop prospect Jefferson Rojas’s season was:

White Sox Signing Starter Erick Fedde to a Two-Year Deal
