Ultimately, money spends, but this CANNOT help the New York Yankees in their efforts to land major free agents this offseason.
One of the most prominent agents in the sport, Joel Wolfe, just lit into the Yankees because of comments GM Brian Cashman made about his client, Giancarlo Stanton. I mentioned it in the Bullets this morning because the comments were so bold for Cashman to just say it all out loud (via the NY Daily News): โWeโve gotta get Stanton up and running again. Heโs injury-prone. We all have lived and known that, but heโs never not hit when heโs playing, and this year is the first time that thatโs happened โฆ. We try to limit the time heโs down. But Iโm not gonna tell you heโs gonna play every game next year because heโs not. Heโs going to wind up getting hurt again more likely than not because it seems to be part of his game. But I know that when heโs right and healthy – other than this past year – the guyโs a great hitter and has been for a long time.โ
Here is Wolfe responding to those comments:
Wowwwwwww. I kinda love the idea that a prominent agent is out there telling the world that, hey, you can sign up to play in New York, but know what you’re getting yourself into. You don’t even have to be a client of Wolfe’s to hear that message loud and clear. And the fact that he EXPLICITLY included the line about “foreign and domestic” … again, not hard to read between those lines, no matter who is your agent.
But, speaking of Wolfe’s clients, one of the most prominent? Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who is coming over and is being targeted by, among others, the New York teams.
Again, other free agents will certainly park this in the back of their minds, and while I reiterate that money is the most important factor in most free agents’ decisions, it is not the ONLY factor. The Yankees might’ve just lost a lot of tiebreakers.
Thank you, Brian Cashman.
