Today is coaching news day for the Chicago Cubs, it seems. We’ve learned that bench coach Andy Green is off to join the Mets front office, and assistant hitting coach Johnny Washington is off to become the hitting coach for the Angels.
But Maddie Lee reports two big names are staying:
So according to Lee’s sources, both Chicago Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy and hitting coach Dustin Kelly will stay on Craig Counsell’s new staff. I won’t pretend that we know EXACTLY how well these guys perform, but I do know that the front office really likes Hottovy and Kelly. I also know the pitching has looked great, generally speaking, under Hottovy’s tenure, and some of the Cubs’ bats had a really great year in 2023. I had really hoped that these two coaches, in particular, would be sticking around with Counsell.
There will be more news on this front coming soon – and it’s possible that bigger changes could come after 2024 – but for now, it sounds like two of the key positions will have a little continuity.
