Chicago Cubs Promoting Jared Banner from VP of Player Development to Assistant General Manager

With the departure of Craig Breslow to the Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs effectively had two key jobs to fill this offseason: they needed a new Vice President of Pitching (i.e., the top pitching man in the organization), and also another Assistant GM, since Breslow held both titles and filled both roles. Sure, the Cubs MIGHT find someone who can wear both hats, but you wouldn’t necessarily assume it. Besides, the Cubs were down to just one Assistant GM in Ehsan Bokhari, so an addition there was needed anyway.

Still waiting on that new VP of Pitching, but you can now say the Cubs have filled an Assistant General Manager role with a well-deserved promotion:

Banner’s ascent in the Cubs organization has been rapid, after arriving just a few years ago from the Mets (he was previously with the Red Sox, where his time overlapped a bit with Jed Hoyer’s). He has been the VP of Player Development (colloquially, the Farm Director) the last two seasons, and now he’ll have more Major League responsibilities on his plate.

It’s a well-deserved promotion for Banner, and also a great way to preserve continuity in a player development process that has, over the last few years, been going very well.

Now the Cubs have another big hole to fill, however. The VP of Player Development is a key, key, key job in an organization, essentially the head of all things farm system. The Cubs will have an opportunity to do more promoting from within – nothing wrong with that, as part of what you’re trying to do is cultivate and develop front office talent – or to seek out an external hire. They could also still look to add another Assistant GM and a VP of Pitching, by the way.
