Although Colt Keith is not quite the same tier of prospect as Jackson Chourio, he’s a consensus top-30 type in baseball, and he’s joining Chourio in some rare company: he’s signing a long-term extension before he’s even played in the big leagues.
Keith, 22, is getting himself to the big leagues, but he’s doing so at the price of a pretty darn minimized guarantee:
So, essentially, in exchange for any upside achieved during his arbitration years, Keith is guaranteeing himself just shy of $30 million a few years in advance. I totally get it. He’s now set for life. But eesh. This is such a no-brainer deal for the Tigers, who are exposed to very minimal risk, and now they not only get super cheap arbitration years if he’s a stud early in his career, but they ALSO get super cheap option years in what would have been his first three years of free agency.
Keith, a 5th round pick in 2020, rose steadily through the Tigers’ farm system, reaching Triple-A in July of this past year. An eyeball check says the bat looked quite good at that level, and he was probably going to reach MLB at some point this season even without the extension (though the Tigers almost certainly would’ve held him back to get the extra year of control).
This is. Just. Wow. This is a bargain. A big bargain. Are you taking notes, Cubs?
