There was rumor-y buzz today about a Mariners trade coming down the pike, and sure enough, it’s happened. And it’s for a player who has been on the block all winter.
Infielder Jorge Polanco is headed from the Twins to the Mariners:
Jorge Polanco is under contract for $10.5 million in 2024, and also has a $12 million team option for 2025. The 30-year-old infielder can play any of shortstop, second, and third, though his defense generally rates at as below average. He can hit, though, going .255/.333/.462/121 wRC+ over the past three seasons, averaging about 20 homers a year. He’s a switch-hitter, he runs the bases well, so on and so forth. You get the picture: he’s a valuable guy who could fit on virtually any roster. The one big ding? He dealt with knee, hamstring, and ankle issues in 2023.
The Mariners had wanted another infield bat, and in Polanco, they instantly get a significant upgrade at second or third base, and without committing any long-term dollars (of which ownership has been wary, apparently).
The Twins had reportedly been looking to trade Polanco all offseason, mostly to unload the salary. It makes you wonder what they might be doing with that saved money. Of course, if these big leaguers make much money, maybe there won’t be a ton of 2024 savings:
More soon. The Cubs had been rumored to have interest in one of the Twins’ bats, but Polanco was always a tough fit, which only got tougher after the Michael Busch acquisition.
UPDATE: The money side could get complicated here, because DeSclafani was kind of a salary dump in the Giants/Robbie Ray trade, and it depends on how much money is going in which direction:
Gonzalez was a notable prospect in the Mariners’ system as of last year (top-10, top-5, depending on where you checked), and Bowen put together a solid pro debut at A-ball last year. Seems like a great return on its face for one year of Polanco, but Gonzalez had a down partial season at High-A, so maybe his stock had trended in the wrong direction since the previous rankings? But he also still just made MLB Pipeline’s new top-100? So seems like he’s still highly regarded? I won’t claim to be a Mariners’ prospecting expert here.
Oh, and Topa is a nice cost-controlled reliever, too. Good get for the Twins if they were worried about money. And, like I said, Polanco is an instant upgrade for the Mariners at key spots of need.
