Now we know how the Twins are using at least some of the money they saved in the Jorge Polanco trade.
The Twins are signing first baseman Carlos Santana to a one-year deal:
Santana, 37, has been pretty close to a league-average bat the last four years, which won’t knock your socks off at first base, but it can at least raise your floor at the spot, especially given that he’s still a pretty solid defender there.
From here, the Twins might yet have a little cash to spend, though it isn’t immediately clear if there’d be any overlap with Cubs pursuits. The Cubs, for example, wouldn’t have been in on Santana at this point. Although he can offer them another needed lefty bat (he’s a switch-hitter), they are probably looking for more impact if they pull the trigger.
