Maybe it’s because I saw my kid’s performance of ‘Newsies’ last night, but I wanted to be really careful not to shout some salacious headline from the virtual street corner and tell you to READ ALL ABOUT IT!
So that’s my soft attempt up there to preface what I’m sharing with the idea that a Jordan Montgomery signing by the Cubs at this point would surprise me, at least if it came in addition to trying to re-sign Cody Bellinger.
But that’s what Jon Heyman has suggested. After reiterating his position that Bellinger’s most likely landing spot is still the Cubs, Heyman said he would not rule out the Cubs on Montgomery:
Part of Heyman’s rationale there is that Montgomery is close with Cubs starter Jameson Taillon, which, hey, I’m sure it matters a little bit, but really it’d come down to whether the Cubs are willing to pay over $150 million for Montgomery, or whether Montgomery is actually going to wind up getting something closer to $100 million.
It’s not as if I couldn’t see the value in the Cubs signing Jordan Montgomery. We’ve discussed it before, there has been reported interest, and it does make some sense.
But, given Tom Ricketts’ comments and recent reporting/my analysis about the Cubs’ preferences vis a vis the luxury tax, I don’t see the math working out for the Cubs to sign both Bellinger and Montgomery (again, unless they are playing the most elaborate game of 8-D chess). So Montgomery might be in play only if the Cubs can’t sign Bellinger, or give up on the waiting there.
It’s also possible that Montgomery finally signs somewhere before Bellinger does:
So, the Red Sox really want Jordan Montgomery, but they are waiting out the price (not unlike the Cubs and Bellinger).
