Just before today’s finale against the Dodgers kicked off at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs announced a roster move. The right-handed, late-inning, hard-throwing Julian Merryweather (shoulder strain) is heading to the Injured List. And he’s being replaced by the right-handed, hard-throwing, 24-year-old Daniel Palencia.
For as much as I like Daniel Palencia (and for how awesome it is that the Cubs can replace one upper-90s relief pitcher with another), Julian Merryweather was arguably one of four Cubs relievers in Craig Counsell’s initial circle of trust (alongside Adbert Alzolay, Hector Neris, and Mark Leiter Jr.). With him out, the Cubs lose a late-inning option and take a hit to their depth if any other injuries pop up.
So, yeah, there’s really no way around how much this stinks for the Cubs in terms of both immediate upside and near-term depth. Now, we just hope hope Merryweather won’t be out for long.
That said, I really do like Daniel Palencia, and I kinda hoped/assumed he’d make the bullpen out of spring training. With any luck, he’ll be really good while Merryweather is out and can take over a permanent spot of someone else, when Merryweather is ready to come back.
