As spotted by a number of eagle-eyed folks out there, the Chicago Cubs transaction page was updated tonight to include this line: “Chicago Cubs optioned RHP Jose Cuas to Iowa Cubs.”
There is no corresponding move listed. Yet.
That means the Cubs knew they were sending Cuas down as of today, so they optioned him today, and then they don’t actually have to bring up someone to fill back up the 26-man roster until tomorrow night’s game in Seattle.
Let your mind run wild on what the Cubs might do, but it’s likely to be something relatively benign, like calling up Keegan Thompson or Hayden Wesneski (already on the 40-man roster), or adding Carl Edwards Jr. or Richard Lovelady (they’d need a 40-man spot, but Julian Merryweather, sadly, could be transferred to the 60-day IL). There’s an outside chance the Cubs would surprise and add someone who’s currently a little more off the radar, but I doubt it at this point. I think one of the two 40-man guys is most likely, and since Wesneski has been starting for Iowa, my guess is Thompson.
As for Cuas, I think you understand the situation. Although the Cubs hold the 29-year-old sidearmer in high esteem, his first five appearances this year were simply not close to what the Cubs needed (9.00 ERA, 18.2% K, 6.1% BB, 36.4% GB, 54.5% hard hit).
Getting a fresh arm in the mix was desirable for the long stretch of games ahead anyway, but also giving Cuas a reset is the right move. He was getting hit HARD, he wasn’t striking guys out, and he was not locating his pitches. He’s got a sinker/sweeper combo that can absolutely play out of that arm slot, but like any other pitcher, he’s not going to have success if he can’t throw the pitch close to where he intends. So Cuas will head to Iowa to keep working, try to get locked in, and then come back up at some point.
