Cubs Announce (Part of) the Rotation for Atlanta

Jameson Taillon

Meaning no offense to Kyle Hendricks, but if you had to choose a veteran right-handed in the Cubs’ rotation to face the Atlanta Braves this week, you’re probably going with Jameson Taillon.

We may never know if that was part of the calculus in punting Taillon’s could-have-been Sunday start in Pittsburgh a couple days, and bringing back Hendricks from the IL to take it. But if so, the first half worked out well enough, with Hendricks delivering five strong innings in yesterday’s win.

And now, Taillon is ready to return against the Braves.

The Cubs have announced that, after Shota Imanaga makes his start tonight in Atlanta against the shockingly-excellent-as-a-starter Reynaldo Lopez, Jameson Taillon will pitch tomorrow against yup-he’s-resurgent-so-that’s-great Chris Sale. Thankfully, the back issue that popped back up last week did not rise to the level of an injury, and the Cubs weren’t necessarily worse for the wear in having skipped one of his starts, despite how good Taillon has been this year.

As for the Wednesday finale, the Cubs are still listing a TBD against Charlie Morton. Both of Javier Assad (normal rest) and Hayden Wesneski (who started the game before Assad’s last start) would be available to start that day, though my guess on why the Cubs are leaving it TBD is in case Wesneski is needed at some point in these first two Atlanta games. If not, maybe the Cubs decide to give him Wednesday’s start, and buy every other starter an extra day of rest.

It’s something Craig Counsell did all the time with the Brewers: find extra days of rest for the rotation where you can. It’s not a “six-man rotation,” but it can have that flavor for a week or two when the schedule and bullpen usage and starter health accommodate.
