Angels Manager Ron Washington Threw Luis Guillorme Under the Bus, Then Drove the Bus, Then Backed Over Him Again

Ron Washington must absolutely hate his new infielder, Luis Guillorme, who was acquired just five days ago. There is no other explanation for what he said after last night’s game. I mean, I’m kinda tongue-in-cheek, but this is pretty extreme.

To set up the scene, the Angels were down a run in the 8th inning to the Cardinals, and had the bases loaded with one out. Fearing a double-play to end the inning, Washington called for Guillorme to put down a suicide squeeze bunt. Risky call. Maybe even a bad call. But I can at least understand the logic.

Problem was, the pitch wound up waaaaay into the other batter’s box, and Guillorme didn’t have a prayer:

You can take one look at that thing and quite obviously discern that this was not Guillorme’s fault. He tried. He reached out as far as a guy can and still couldn’t quite reach the pitch (even if he could reach it, having the bat control to make contact in THAT position would be an absurd ask). Just one of those things that happens, right?

NOPE!

Because Ron Washington put Luis Guillorme on absolute blast for missing the pitch:

Even after initially saying that it was Guillorme’s fault for not getting the bunt down, Washington later decided to go back to the well to blast him again. Yeesh. Dude was clearly ticked off, and you wonder if there’s more to it than a single missed bunt.

Managers NEVER throw their players under the bus like that, even when they’re right about it! And Washington was pretty clearly not right about it!
