Chicago Cubs Lineup: Seiya Sits, But PCA is Back

Cubs Lineup

CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs dropped the opener last night at Wrigley Field, but they’ve got a Friday 1:20 start with Kyle Hendricks on the bump (and the sun shining) today. Maybe those good vibes will be enough to take on Paul Skenes. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for Game 2 at Wrigley Field.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

  1. Mike Tauchman, DH
  2. Ian Happ, LF
  3. Cody Bellinger, RF
  4. Chris Morel, 3B
  5. Michael Busch, 1B
  6. Miles Mastrobuoni, SS
  7. Nick Madrigal, 2B
  8. Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF
  9. Miguel Amaya, C

The first thing you’ll notice about today’s Cubs lineup is the lack of Seiya Suzuki.

And although it doesn’t usually make sense to sit your team’s best hitter, while replacing him with a struggling batter (Ian Happ) in the two-hole … today, I think it was the right call. When Suzuki faced Paul Skenes last weekend, he struck him out twice and it didn’t even look particularly close. Suzuki was just not seeing him well at all.

Maybe Suzuki can re-enter the game when Skenes exits, but to start, I’m all for the extra lefties – Mike Tauchman, Ian Happ, Cody Bellinger, Pete Crow-Armstrong. Also, that’s some seriously fantastic outfield defense for the Cubs this afternoon. Hopefully that helps Kyle Hendricks.

Sadly, there’s still no Nico Hoerner in the lineup, which is odd considering we’re past the point of optimizing for the retroactive IL stint. Hopefully that means he’ll be available soon.

Pittsburgh Pirates Lineup:

  1. Andrew McCutchen, DH
  2. Bryan Reynolds, LF
  3. Oneil Cruz, SS
  4. Connor Joe, RF
  5. Nick Gonzalez, 2B
  6. Jack Suwinski, CF
  7. Yasmani Grandal, C
  8. Rowdy Tellez, 1B
  9. Jared Triolo, 3B

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Kyle Hendricks, RHP

Kyle Hendricks has made six starts so far this season. The first five were horrible (28 earned runs in 21 IP) and led to a brief stint on the injured list + a rehab assignment. Hendricks returned from his little break against the Pirates last weekend, making his best start of the year: 5.0 IP, 2H, 1ER, 4BB, 5K. But because of the homer (he’s allowed nine already in just 26.0 IP) and the general wildness, plus the Pirates struggles against righties, that just wasn’t the most convincing performance.

He’ll have to do it again today for us to start believing he can be a season-long fixture in the rotation. Of course, this matchup comes against the same team he faced the last time out, which complicates the data. On the one hand, facing the same time twice in short order is never easy for a pitcher, but on the other, the Pirates are literally the worst team in baseball versus righties. So … call it a wash? If he does well, we can count it.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Paul Skenes, RHP

Paul Skenes made his debut against the Cubs last weekend in Pittsburgh, and his follow-up is … also against the Cubs, but this time at Wrigley Field. Although Skenes came out firing last weekend with back-to-back strikeouts and a four-up, three-down first inning, the Cubs ultimately chased him after just 4.0 IP with three earned runs. Sure, he struck out seven batters, but the Cubs logged six hits, including a homer, and two walks in four innings pitched. He looked plenty dominant though, so I wouldn’t get too excited. He’s the top pitching prospect in baseball for a reason. Let’s just hope the Wrigley crowd scares him and he’s still not able to go 5.0+ innings or whatever.
