The Cubs Walk It Off on a Weird Play at the Plate!

Whew. That game was kinda dumb, but I tell you, the ending sure was fun. And also weird!

So, to set the stage, the Pirates and Cubs’ offenses could do nothing all day long. The game was still 0-0 in the bottom of the 9th when Cody Bellinger doubled with one out, and then Christopher Morel hit what looked like a game-winning, walk-off single! Catcher dropped the ball, so Cody is safe, game over!

Except the Pirates challenged the play at the plate, presumably arguing that Bellinger was out on an initial gloved tag, and then when the catcher subsequently dropped the ball, that didn’t matter because he’d taken the ball out of his glove? Or Bellinger interfered to knock it out? Something else?

Whatever the claim, the review officials didn’t buy it, and the Cubs secured the walk-off win:

It was the Cubs’ second weird, game-ending, required-a-review play at the plate this year (remember that Mets one with Pete Alonso and Miguel Amaya?).

And from Cody on scoring the winning run:

Status Check: Is Cody Bellinger in a Position to Opt Out of His Deal with the Cubs?

Wake Up and Watch the Cubs Actually Win for the Second Day in a Row
