Alexander Canario Sends His First Pitch of the Night Out of the Park (UPDATE: Make It Two)

Alexander Canario wasted no time on Thursday night.

The Iowa Cubs outfielder blasted the first pitch he saw over the left-center field wall. Brandon Leibrandt of the Louisville Bats paid the price for leaving a four-seamer right over the middle of the plate. The ball traveled 414ft for Canario’s 8th homer of the season.

Canario came into the night without a hit in three straight games. All things considered, it was one of the poorer stretches for the 24-year-old this season, especially when we factor in that he compiled 13 hits in his seven contests before that. Canario has been rock solid all season long in Triple-A, posting a .538 slugging percentage over his first 134 plate appearances.

The prospect’s trip to the big leagues this season also proved pretty solid. While he only had 25 plate appearances, Canario mustered six hits with four runs. The sample size may be small, but it’s sure hard not to think about as the Cubs stumble below .500.

I don’t need to remind you, but the Brewers took three of the four games in Milwaukee to push the Cubs below .500 (28-29). Was the offense as putrid as the previous few series? No. The Cubs at least scored four runs in three straight games. However, there is little denying that the vibes around this team right now are at a season-low.

Pumping some life into that lineup and locker room is key, and we’ve already seen them call back up PCA hoping for a boost. Should they consider finding room for Canario again, too? I know that might be difficult with a busy outfield, but it might be something the team eventually has to consider.

UPDATE

Fast forward to the sixth inning, and Canario used a different method with the same results. He stayed alive to force a full count before sending another fastball over the wall.

Even better, this one was a ridiculous 466 ft! That’s the longest homer by an Iowa Cubs this season, per the team!

Have yourself a day, Alexander!
