Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 7, Reds 5 – June 1, 2024

The calendar just had to flip to June.

And the rain just had to come for three and a half hours.

And the rain just had to continue lightly through the night.

And everyone had to just be a little sloppy.

That’s all it takes, and boom, the Cubs can finally win a game!

A wild game that didn’t end until after midnight saw Seiya Suzuki playing the goat and then the GOAT, both times with the bases loaded. The first, on a would-be inning-ending pop fly to right in the top of the second, saw Suzuki simply drop the ball. It was as bad as you’d imagine, even granting the conditions, and three runs scored on the error (one more followed that). Then, in the bottom of the very same inning, Suzuki got a chance for redemption with the bases loaded and two outs, and he sent one out to get back all four runs he’d gifted the Reds.

From there it was a lot more slop, and a lot more Justin Steele mostly pitching out of jams. The game was tied at 5 in the 8th when Dansby Swanson got ahold of one – that had to feel so good – to give the Cubs a two-run lead. Hector Neris saved it in the 9th RELATIVELY quietly, so that’s nice.

Can I make the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game a guy who messed up bad enough that he HAD then do something incredible to get the Cubs back in the game? Sure I can. It’s my post. So it’s Seiya Suzuki.

Full box score.
