Yep. Not surprised or even all that disappointed anymore. This is just the way the Cubs season has gone. Small tiny pops of goodness tucked between mountains of injuries and underperformance. The latest? Well, actually, the latest is Seiya Suzuki and his pesky oblique, keeping him out of the lineup today. But the second latest and arguably the biggest for now? That would be Nico Hoerner’s hand fracture. Yes, I said hand fracture.
Nico Hoerner Injury Update
In case you forgot, Nico Hoerner was hit on the outside of his right hand (above the wrist per Meghan Montemurro) during Thursday’s win over the White Sox. The initial prognosis was reportedly “inconclusive,” but now we have more information (and you’ll quickly see why the early commentary was a little all over the place).
According to multiple reports, Nico Hoerner’s X-rays revealed a small fracture in his right hand. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the fracture is evidently small enough not to necessarily require an immediate and lengthy absence.
In fact, the Cubs are still deciding whether to put Hoerner on the Injured List at all (I’m sure they definitely won’t wait too long to decide what to do, forcing themselves to play short-handed for no reasons, before ultimately putting him on the IL anyway… couldn’t be them).
Either way, Nico Hoerner can’t play until the pain and swelling subsides and he’s “not at that point” yet. What are the Cubs going to do in the meantime? Well, immediately, you’re likely to see more David Bote. Because remember, Nick Madrigal is out hurt now with a broken hand, as well. If it requires more time than they think, maybe Luis Vázquez comes back up to play some infield.
