There it is. The first REAL “Trade Deadline”-y deal of the year.
Puk, 29, is controllable via arbitration for two more seasons after this one, which certainly improved his value. But still, that’s a strong return for a pretty-darn-good reliever.
De Los Santos, 21, is one of the biggest power prospects in the game, though he’s mostly limited to that being his carrying trait. Still, it’s a ton of power (28 homers in 87 games so far this year between Double-A and Triple-A). Pintar, 23, raked at High-A to open the season, and recently reached Double-A. Both are top-30 system prospects, with De Los Santos in the 15-ish range, and Pintar near the end of the list.
The obvious comp here is Mark Leiter Jr., who, at his best, is every bit as effective as Puk, and comes with just as much team control. The question is whether Leiter’s more limited track record of high-level success, and pretty extreme reliance on a notoriously fickle pitch (splitter), would make a possible return be a lot less. I’m definitely intrigued, though.
