I’m not sure that Trevor Rogers is the thumb in today’s dam of held up transactions, but the Marlins lefty could be on the move soon.
Rogers, 26, long an up-and-comer who was sooo close to breaking out (but really only showed it in 2021), is probably more attractive on the trade market than your typical 4.53 ERA starter. He has upside beyond that, is still developing, and is under team control for two more seasons after this one. I bet there really are a lot of suitors.
UPDATE: Rogers must indeed have had a lot more suitors than his numbers suggest, because he’s netting the Marlins a very nice return from the Orioles:
Norby, 24, has been stuck at Triple-A this year behind the myriad other Orioles prospects, patiently raking and awaiting a turn. He was just ranked as the 7th best prospect in that system in the updated BA rankings, as a 50-grade prospect. Getting him PLUS MORE for Rogers is a huge win, and indicative of just how eager the Orioles (and the market) were to get someone like him.
UPDATE 2: Oh WTF. The plus is Kyle Stowers?!?
Stowers, 26, has graduated as a prospect, but also fits into the group of exceptional Orioles positional prospects who just need playing time somewhere. He’s likely to be very good. They got him AND Norby for Rogers?!? And Yusei Kikuchi got the huge package he got?
I am desperately going to need to know what the offers were for Jameson Taillon, and why they were or were not acceptable.
The issue is that even if you regard 2/$36M as fair (or better!) for Taillon in 2025/26, and I do, that simply won’t matter for SOME potential buyers. There are SOME teams that simply would not want that contract no matter what. Meanwhile, I’ve gotta believe there are SOME teams that would see Taillon’s contract as affirmatively desirable at this moment. So, because of that schism – plus his no-trade rights, plus this crazy market – pretty hard to exactly pin down his trade value.
Hence why I’d really want to be a fly on that wall.
