A few late-night bits on Garrett Crochet, the White Sox ace who may or may not be traded by tomorrow’s – er, today’s! – deadline.
- Sure sounds like White Sox GM Chris Getz was unhappy about the way Crochet’s extension preferences leaked out, and it probably did have a damaging impact on his trade market:
- If the White Sox do trade Crochet, it’s possible that desired extension does not come – from any team – and thus he simply does not pitch in the postseason. From Ken Rosenthal:
“Crochet was on the “back burner” while the White Sox worked on the larger (three-team) trade, according to a source briefed on their discussions.
That’s not to say Crochet will be dealt. Because he figures to be unavailable for the postseason, some in the industry believe his trade value this winter will be just as high, given his two additional years of club control.”
- Figures to be unavailable for the postseason. That’s an interesting way of putting things. And if it’s true, then you set aside the extension thing, and you just concede that his trade value is probably the same now as it would be in the offseason … which means a team like the Cubs would have just as much chance of acquiring him now as any other team (and could have interest, since it would be for 2025 and 2026, where the Cubs are focusing). Now, I’m not saying the Cubs are going after Crochet or even should. I’m just saying, they are probably standing on pretty even footing with every other team at the moment, and that’s not true for every trade piece.
- The talks are happening, by the way, with teams not entirely scared away by the whole extension demand thing:
