CUBS LINEUP โ This week, the Chicago Cubs are facing the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are supposed to be a part of that “weak stretch” in the schedule. But it doesn’t really sound so weak, when you have to face – in order – (1) Mitch Keller, (2) Jared Jones (yep, he’s coming back for tomorrow’s matchup vs the Cubs), and (3) Paul Skenes. Good luck!
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Ian Happ, LF
- Michael Busch, 1B
- Seiya Suzuki, DH
- Cody Bellinger, RF
- Isaac Paredes, 3B
- Nico Hoerner, 2B
- Dansby Swanson, SS
- Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF
- Miguel Amaya, C
Historically, lefties (.346 wOBA, 21.5 K%) have hit Keller a lot better than righties have (.315 wOBA 23.3K%). However, that gap is a little narrower this season, with both hitter types having less success overall.
With that said, Ian Happ does have two doubles, three homers, and five walks against Keller for his career (25 ABs). Maybe he’ll keep the pressure on tonight.
Pittsburgh Pirates Lineup:
- Isiah Kiner-Falefa, SS
- Bryan Reynolds, LF
- Oneil Cruz, DH
- Nick Gonzales, 2B
- Rowdy Tellez, 1B
- Bryan De La Cruz, RF
- Yasmani Grandal, C
- Jared Triolo, 3B
- Ji Hwan Bae, CF
Pitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Jameson Taillon, RHP
Jameson Taillon desperately needs a bounce-back outing. Even though he has occasionally weathered an early storm and kept the Cubs in the game, he’s ultimately delivered three duds in a row and four out of his last five starts since July 29. His velocity has also been trending downward lately. Don’t love that.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Mitch Keller, RHP
Mitch Keller is coming off an absolute gem of a start against the Rangers in Texas, during which he struck out nine batters, walked none, and allowed only three hits over 7.0 scoreless innings. But he needed that one, because he had allowed a combined 15 ER in the 9.0 innings prior. But more often than not, Keller is pretty darn good, including when he faced the Cubs earlier this year: 6.0 IP, 2H, 2ER, 3BB, 3K. And he’s the worst pitcher the Cubs lineup will face in this series.
